Newer . . . Faster . . . Better!

In the last few months Kerrypress have made major upgrades to their servers and network environment to further enhance the speed of service offered to their clients.

The Kerrypress network is now running at Gigabit speeds which has improved all aspects of the typesetting environment.

Total automation . . . Web Services

Our Web Service has also had some subtle (but very effective) tweaks that have improved the experience of our customers using this innovative 21st century service.

Some quotes from satisfied users:

‘. . . it is amazing, I can upload my word file and almost instantly have a PDF on my desktop that is ready to send to print.’

‘. . . our database outputs a comma delimited file and that is all the Kerrypress Web Service needs to produce stunning Print Ready PDFs.’

‘. . . the Kerrypress Web Service has revolutionised our XML throughput, allowing us to slice weeks off of our production cycle.’

Talk to Kerrypress today to see how the Web Service can revolutionize your typesetting throughput.

A novel approach to typesetting:

On a wet Wednesday in October 2007 it became clear to Phil and Colin that Kerrypress, the best kept secret in Typesetting, could turn the skills of the ten individuals out in the office and the processing power of the XyEnterprise XML Professional Publisher system to a different use. Its day to day work consisted of legal and academic work, setting looseleaf, books and dictionaries.

. . . but they knew the system could do more, much more.

‘You know,’ said Phil, ‘We could turn this system to anything, but what would really work is setting novels, autobiographies and other straight text volumes.’

Colin rose, thumping the table and shouting, ‘And, by God, we can do it quicker and more cost effectively than anyone else out there.’

Phil jumped to his feet, ‘You’re right! The system we use can turn round novels, autobiographies, anything like that, inside three or four days! We can even cope with high picture levels in a similar time. Imagine what that might mean to tight stretched Production Departments? The changes in stress levels for Editors and Authors?

Imagine a project not just running on time but running ahead of time?’
They imagined, and it happened. . . .

It has been my great privilege to have worked with Kerrypress Typesetters of Luton for the best part of 20 years, firstly in my role as Managing Editor at Lexis Nexis and more recently as MD of my own publishing services company, Etica Press Ltd.

Throughout this time, my relationship with Kerrypress has been marked by a number of factors. They have offered a very high dregree of professionalism at all times. They have been completely honest and reliable in all their dealings. And they have combined a warm, friendly and always supportive relationship with editorial and production staff with a uniquely forward-thinking and innovative approach to the production process.

Phil, Ian, Barry and the other staff that I have got to know at Kerry over a long period have become part of the team, always willing to go that extra mile to achieve the best possible result, and I feel privileged to have known and worked with them.

Xyenterprise
and the XML Environment

XML has become mainstream for content and knowledge management, as well as open systems architectures in IT. For content and knowledge management deployments, XML adds structure and intelligence to data that can help organizations find, assemble, reuse and deliver content in print, Web and other electronic forms, while IT organizations have embraced XML as an open standard for system integration and data processing.

Generally, use of XML has spread more widely in the IT domain than it has in content authoring and delivery environments. This is largely due to the fact that XML initiatives in IT are transparent to end users within the organization who can continue to use familiar interfaces on their desktops. Because XML is “under the hood,” it has little impact on how people go about their daily jobs.'

Why Hasn’t XML Growth Happened Sooner?
The very notion of structured content is partly responsible for the limited enterprise deployment of XML technologies. Replacing common, friendly tools on someone’s desktop with a highly structured XML interface has been a significant barrier to adoption. Although there are very robust authoring tools, it is a major change to move someone from a desktop.

XyEnterprise builds solutions that help workgroups simplify and expedite the automated creation, delivery and reuse of content across the enterprise. With unmatched XML expertise, built upon a 20-year heritage of successful deployments, XyEnterprise excels at delivering configurable and scalable XML content management and publishing solutions for commercial publishing, technical documentation groups and departments with a need to communicate or document information.

Darren Craig

In July 2006, Darren Craig, who had already worked for Kerrypress for 14 years, originally in our print department and more recently as assistant production controller, stepped into Barry Perry’s shoes as Production Manager when Barry retired.

Talk to any production controller and they will tell you that the most important aspects which determine the value of a supplier is accuracy combined with the ability to keep to the agreed schedules at a reasonable price.

At Kerrypress, we pride ourselves on our ability to maintain very tight schedules without compromising on quality or value.

Our Production Team, headed by our Production Manager, Darren Craig, are in daily liaison with Publishing controllers to ensure that jobs are not allowed to slip in their production cycle.

Large enough to cope . . . small enough to care

Kerrypress is very much a family business run by two brothers-in-law, Phillip Conquest and Ian Craig with younger members of the Craig and Conquest clans eager to follow on in their footsteps.

We follow the old-fashoined adage that the "customer is always right" and that we are only ever as good as our last job.

Customer satisfaction is always at the top of our list of priorities!

Formally as Tolley, Butterworths and now as Lexis Nexis we have worked with Kerrypress for approximately 20 years.

During that time they have worked on a wide variety of our products including looseleafs and books. They have offered us a consistent and reliable service and have always done what they can to meet our schedules even when these change. We have had a good working relationship with the staff at Kerrypress and have met with them on a regular basis to discuss ongoing work, future developments etc.

Their use of the XPP system was of great value to us and allowed us to introduce an element of automation into our processes.

Web Services . . . the way to go!

The move to XML production using Xyenterprise XML Professional Publisher has revolutionised typesetting within Kerrypress with XML projects now accounting for 90 per cent of our current workflow.

Our customers supply us with their valid XML or SGML along with their DTD. This data is imported directly into the XPP system without conversion.

Recently we took this technology one step further!
Our innovative Web Service allows our customers to access their typeset jobs from their desktop utilising nothing more than their favourite Web Browser.

By utilising Kerrypress Interactive Web Services our customers can view files, edit files, and upload XML or Microsoft Word files directly to our XML Professional Publisher system and see the resulting PDF almost instantly.

Total control

They can also control pagination with starting page numbers for each file, and whether that file should start on right or left hand page.
The amount of interaction that the editor can have is only limited by their expertise levels. Most aspects of the typeset page “can” be controlled from within the Web Services interface . . . but most customers prefer to restrict their editors to using pre-formed templates.

Late amendments can be taken in by the editor on their Word/XML files and uploaded and PDF’d without any intervention by our staff with the result that the Web Services system could be available 24 hours a day.

Firewall friendly
Our new “firewall friendly” interface has opened the service for use by many customers who were previously blocked from using our Java interface by over-zealous firewall systems.
Please visit the Kerrypress Web Services website for an online demonstration.

The staff at Kerrypress are always helpful and efficient - quick at turning our work round and proactive in flagging up errors.
I have every confidence in recommending them.

Disaster Recovery

All data is backed up on a daily basis to DAT tape, and also archived across the network to a computer in a different part of the building.

The backup tapes are removed from the premises the next day on a two-week rotation.

Regular backups are also made to DVD Rom and removed from the premises for permanent storage.

In this way we can ensure that the disruption in the event of a disaster is kept to an absolute minimum.

Way back in 1987 we totally updated our equipment to the then state of the art AM Varityper Epic typesetting system. This system was still in daily use in early 2000 and had proved to have been an excellent choice, and was indeed still able to cope with the very heavy demands we made of it. However, technology moves on, and with the introduction of very fast Unix based server systems, combined with the latest software technology in batch pagination of books and looseleaf publications, we felt that the time had come to allow the Epic system to go into a well earned retirement. We therefore installed a new typesetting system in 1996 based around a Unix Sun Blade 1000 running dedicated <a href="http://www.xyenterprise.com/">Xyenterprise Typesetting System</a> and utilising our existing Apple Macintosh computers as X-Terminals. The Xyvison XPP XML Professional Publisher system is backed up by a full support contract giving us access to the constant updating and revisions which are supplied by Xyvision Xyenterprise. We also offer a full <a href="web.html">Web Design</a> Desk Top Publishing and Design service to our customers utilising both Apple Macintosh and Windows systems, and we are happy to produce work either from customers edited disks, or indeed to supply data for work already produced back to customers for editing in-house. We are also very adept at Word Processor translation having our own Intermedia 4000 data conversion multi-disk reader, and we have had a great deal of success in this field producing some 200,000 pages per year by this method.
